Retirees and pre-retirees
You saved for thirty years. Now it has to become a paycheck.
ArchAngel Financial Services builds retirement income plans for families in Apple Valley and San Diego, in person — coordinating withdrawals, taxes, pensions, Social Security, and estate documents so the money arrives predictably. The same plan is available by secure video for clients further out.
Built for this work since 1994.
The firm was founded in Apple Valley in 1994 to care for our clients' financial security and peace of mind, and it was built deliberately: planning, investments, tax preparation, and estate work under one roof, with an attorney and an investment advisor on the same team.
That structure exists because retirement decisions are rarely just investment decisions. A withdrawal has a tax consequence, a trust has a titling consequence, and a pension election has a survivor consequence. When those conversations happen in three separate offices, the pieces stop agreeing.
What we hear
The problems that bring retirees to us.
Savings, but no paycheck
Thirty years of accumulating ends and nobody hands you a withdrawal strategy. Which account first, how much, and what it costs in tax.
California tax on every dollar
California taxes retirement withdrawals as ordinary income and does not exempt pensions or IRA distributions. Sequencing matters here more than in most states.
Pension elections you cannot undo
CalPERS, CalSTRS, and utility pensions ask for a survivor election once, permanently, often at the same moment you file for Social Security.
Medicare and IRMAA surprises
A large Roth conversion or property sale two years ago can raise this year's Medicare premiums without warning.
A trust nobody has read since 2009
Old California trusts with stale titling and beneficiary designations that quietly contradict the will.
Market risk at the wrong time
A poor first few years of withdrawals does lasting damage. Sequence-of-returns risk is a planning problem, not a market opinion.
How we help
What we do about it.
Organize
Every account, pension statement, Social Security estimate, and trust document in one place — including the ones you forgot.
Income plan
A written plan for which account funds which year, built around your spending, not a rule of thumb.
Tax sequencing
Coordinating taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth withdrawals with California and federal brackets, IRMAA thresholds, and charitable giving.
Social Security timing
Claiming decisions modeled against your pension, your spouse's benefit, and your actual longevity assumptions.
Investments that serve the plan
Portfolios built to fund withdrawals through a downturn rather than to win an argument about markets.
Estate work in house
California trust review, titling, and beneficiary alignment handled by an attorney on our team — not referred out and forgotten.
Questions and answers
Retirement questions we answer often.
- How much do I need to retire?
- There is no single number. It depends on your spending, your pension and Social Security, your housing costs, and your tax picture. We model your actual income needs against your actual assets and tell you plainly whether the plan works.
- Does California tax my retirement income?
- California taxes IRA, 401(k), and pension distributions as ordinary income, and does not tax Social Security benefits. Because there is no separate capital gains rate at the state level, withdrawal order and Roth conversion timing carry real weight.
- When should I take Social Security?
- It depends on your other income, your health, your spouse's benefit, and whether delaying leaves a gap you would have to fill from investments. We model the options side by side before you file.
- Should I do Roth conversions before required distributions begin?
- Often the years between retiring and required minimum distributions are the lowest-tax years of your life. Whether conversions help depends on your brackets, Medicare premiums, and heirs — worth modeling, not guessing.
- Do you take over accounts I already have?
- Usually. Most clients arrive with accounts at several institutions. We consolidate what should be consolidated, keep what should be kept, and put one plan around all of it.
